DEPARTMENT OF VETERINARY PHARMACOLOGY AND TOXICOLOGY

The Department of Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology was established at Veterinary College and Research Institute, Theni, in 2023 to offer quality education to B.V.Sc. & A.H. students.

Objectives

Education:

To impart knowledge in the discipline of Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology to the Undergraduate students

Research:

To conduct need-based pharmacological/toxicological research on natural and synthetic drugs and allied products.

Extension:

To offer drug information services to the farming and scientific community.

Education

As per the MSVE-2016 regulations prescribed by the Veterinary Council of India, the department offers the following undergraduate courses for IIIrd Professional Year Students with 4+1 credit hours.

Unit – I : General Pharmacology
Unit – II : Drugs Acting on Autonomic Nervous System
Unit – III: Drugs Acting on Central Nervous System
Unit – IV : Drugs Acting on Different Body Systems
Unit – V : Veterinary Chemotherapy
Unit – VI : Veterinary Toxicology

Infrastructure

The department houses multiple specialized laboratories, including the Pharmacy Laboratory, the Experimental Pharmacology Laboratory, the Chemotherapy and Toxicology Laboratory, and the Research Laboratory. These labs are well-equipped with advanced instruments such as Isolated Tissue Bath, Kymograph, Biosafety Cabinet, Spectrophotometer, Plethysmometer, Photoactometer, Analgesiometer, Binocular Microscope, Rota Rod Apparatus, pH Meter, Centrifuge, Vortex Shaker, Antibiotic Zone Reader, Rat Holders, Observation Cages for Rats and Mice, Incubator, Autoclave, Hot Air Oven, Refrigerators, and an Analytical Balance.
