Genesis and Growth

The Government of Tamil Nadu announced the establishment of fifth Veterinary College and Research Institute (VCRI) of the State in Salem District at Thalaivasal Koot Road at a cost of Rs. 118.76 crore vide G.O. Ms. No. 155 Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries (AH-6) Department dated 01/11/2019 and G.O. Ms. No. 4 Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries (AH-6) Department, Dated 08/01/2021.
Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu participated in the Bhoomi Puja and laid the foundation stone for the establishment of the Veterinary College and Research Institute, Salem on 09.02.2020. Subsequently, the Veterinary College and Research Institute, Salem at Thalaivasal Koot Road was inaugurated on 22.02.2021.
The college is located at a distance of 80 kilometres from Salem town and five kilometres from Thalaivasal on the Salem-Ulundurpet National Highway (NH 79) in a total area of 77.98 acres.
This college is offering a degree course- BVSc & AH (Bachelor of Veterinary Science & Animal Husbandry) from the academic year (2020-21).

Objectives of the Institute

The aim of establishing the Veterinary College and Research Institute, Salem is to provide educational, research and clinical service of the highest quality, to give a new impetus to livestock and poultry sectors and to improve the livelihood of farmers belonging to north-western agroclimatic zone of Tamil Nadu in general and Salem District in particular.


VISION of the Institute

VCRI, Salem envisions to empower the aspiring students and transform them into skilled veterinarians, to carry out innovative research on field-oriented problems of local and regional interest and to transfer the developed technologies from laboratory to the ultimate end users. Further, it endeavours to provide quality services to the livestock and poultry of this region and also to impart capacity building of farmers and entrepreneurs involved in livestock and poultry development and thus uplifting the socio-economic conditions of the rural farming community.

Building Infrastructure

VCRI, Salem has an aesthetically designed administrative block, eight academic blocks with smart class rooms, separate hostel for boys and girls, library block, canteen, Dean’s bungalow, warden quarters and guest house. Further, it comprises 15 Specialized Departments with full- fledged infrastructural and laboratory facilities including dairy and meat processing plants, Livestock Farm Complex to demonstrate animal production techniques and a Veterinary Clinical Complex to treat the animals and to train the students in veterinary services with state- of-the-art facilities.
