LIVESTOCK FARM COMPLEX


The Livestock Farm Complex (LFC) was established on 2020 as a part of Veterinary College and Research Institute, Theni with the objective to provide quality education, research and extension services to the B.V.Sc & A.H. undergraduate students. In compliance with the Minimum Standard of Veterinary Education (MSVE 2016) of Veterinary Council of India, for the demonstration of Animal Production techniques. To cater the above needs, the Livestock Farm complex is maintaining different species and breeds of Livestock and poultry.



Objectives

  • To impart hands on practical training on various Livestock farm practices to the under graduate students.
  • To carry out area specific research on Livestock and poultry.
  • To develop improved varieties and supply germplasms of Livestock and poultry.
  • To establish model fodder plots and supply of fodder slips and seeds to the farming community.

Activities

Dairy section

  • Daily monitoring and management of dairy animals including feeding, watering and maintaining proper housing hygiene.
  • Milking operations including cleaning of udders, proper milking and storage.
  • Healthcare managemental practices such as deworming, vaccination and treatment of animals in case of illness.
  • Breeding activities including heat detection, artificial insemination, pregnancy diagnosis and care of pregnant animals.
  • Calf management practices including colostrum feeding, weaning, dehorning and overall growth monitoring.
  • Training and demonstration for students of Third year B.V.Sc. & A.H. for the course on Livestock Farm Practices (LFP 0+2) on dairy farm operations and management.
  • Providing advisory services to farmers on scientific dairy farming, feeding and disease management.
  • Waste management practices including dung disposal and maintaining environmental hygiene.

Sheep section

Goat section

Piggery section

  • Maintenance of hygienic housing and proper waste disposal practices
  • Sale and distribution of weaned piglets to progressive farmers and nearby institutions
  • Training and demonstration for students of Third year B.V.Sc. & A.H. for the course on Livestock Farm Practices (LFP 0+2) related to pig rearing and management
  • Providing advisory services to farmers on scientific pig rearing and management

Horse section

  • To impart practical sessions on restraining, handling, routine feeding and common stud managemental activities of horse

Fodder Section

  • Fodder section is involved in cultivation of fodder under irrigated and rainfed conditions
  • Model fodder crop plots were established for practical exposure of under graduate students and farmers for exposure to different variety of fodder crops
  • (a) Crops like Fodder Maize var. African Tall, Cumbu Napier hybrid Co(CN)4, Co(BN)5, Guinea grass Co(GG)3, Hedge Lucerne are being maintained under irrigated condition.
  • (b) Crops like Annual fodder sorghum and Perennial fodder sorghum varieties viz., Co(FS)29 and Co 31 and Para grass are being maintained under rainfed condition
  • Impart practical knowledge to undergraduate students for hands-on activities like land preparation, sowing, irrigation, weeding and harvesting of various fodder crops
  • In two acres of irrigated land area, fodder crops viz., Cumbu Napier hybrid Co(CN)4, Co(BN)5, Co6 and Desmanthus were established for supplying green fodders to the livestock maintained at farm
  • In six acres of rainfed land area, Annual fodder sorghum and Perennial fodder sorghum varieties viz., Co(FS)29 and Co 31 fodder sorghum were established for supplying dry fodders to the livestock maintained at farm
  • Micro irrigation system viz., Drip and sprinkler irrigation systems were installed in different fodder fields to conserve the water for supplying of green fodder throughout the year to the farm animals
  • Establishment of tree fodders in the Livestock Farm Complex for feeding to goats
  • Exposure of students to fodder preservation techniques viz., silage, hay making and dry fodder storage
  • Hands-on experience in determining green and dry fodder requirement based on the nutritional needs of various livestock species

Poultry section

  • Daily inspection and monitoring of proper supply of feed , water and maintenance of hygienic conditions in poultry sheds.
  • Management of brooding, rearing and layer operations including care of chicks, growers and adult birds.
  • Breeding and hatchery management practices including egg collection, storage and chick handling.
  • Healthcare management practices including vaccination, deworming and treatment of sick birds.
  • Maintenance of biosecurity measures and proper waste disposal practices.
  • Collection, grading and storage of eggs under hygienic conditions.
  • Sale and distribution of eggs and chicks to farmers.
  • Training and demonstration for students of Third year B.V.Sc. & A.H. for the course on Livestock Farm Practices (LFP 0+2) related to poultry rearing and management.
  • Providing advisory services to farmers on scientific poultry farming and management practices.

COURSES OFFERED

As per the MSVE 2016 regulations prescribed by VCI, the department is offering the following undergraduate courses:

1. Livestock Farm Practices (0+2) – III Professional year B.V.Sc. & A.H. students.

In this course, Students are being trained on familiarization of breeds, identification methods of animals, dentition and age determination, housing of animals, feeding practices, poultry farm and hatchery managemental practices and other routine health care management of farm animals.

2. Livestock Production Management (4+2) – I Professional year B.V.Sc. & A.H. students.

  • As a part of this course under Unit 1, General livestock management, Students are exposed to different livestock species, breeds, identification methods, dentition and age determination, housing of animals, feeding and other management practices of farm animals.
  • As a part of this course under Unit 2, Fodder Production and Conservation, Students are exposed to different fodder crop seeds, fodder crops, manures and fertilizers, different irrigation methods, cultivation practices of different fodder crops and calculating the yield of fodder in the model fodder plot.

Various units of Livestock Production Management (2+2) courses for the first professional year, Animal Nutrition (3+1) and Animal Genetics and Breeding (3+1) courses for the second Professional year are being handled by the faculties of Livestock Farm Complex.

RESEARCH

Short-term goals

  • Evaluation of production and reproduction parameters of livestock and poultry
  • To impart hands on training to the under graduate students on livestock Farm Practices

Long-term goals

  • Conservation of local animal genetic resources of Theni and adjoining districts
  • Development of new varieties of livestock and poultry to suit local agroclimatic conditions
  • Study on alternative to antibiotic growth promoters in Desi birds
  • Research on suitability of fodder crops for windy season, rocky and shallow soils
  • Study on the performance of drip and sprinkler irrigation for fodder crops
  • Identification of different natural plant species existing in the grazing lands of the campus

EXTENSION

  • Farm advisory services.
  • Skill development Trainings programs for rural youth, farmers, farm women on layer, broiler, sheep, goat and cattle farming.
  • Enlightening of farm activities to the farmers, school children during the exposure visit arranged by various line Departments viz., Agriculture, State bank of India, NABARD and Non-Governmental Organizations.
