Madras Veterinary College

CENTRALISED CLINICAL LABORATORY (CCL)

Genesis and Mission

The Centralised clinical laboratory, a unit of the Madras Veterinary College, provides state of the art clinical laboratory diagnosis and provides hands on learning experience and expertise for the undergraduate and post graduate students of TANUVAS.

The unit, formerly referred as Clinical Pathology, is functioning since 1971 to meet the exact demands of advancing veterinary clinical practice; where clinicians are often made to rely completely on laboratory profiles mainly to confirm their diagnosis with the emergence of new systematic disorders and infectious diseases. The current unit was opened on 01/04/1993 under the Directorate of Clinics - TANUVAS. The unit is equipped with state-of-the-art, modern equipment, faculty veterinarians and well trained technical staff.

Objectives

  • To carry out various Clinico–Pathological, Clinico–Parasitological, Clinico-Biochemical and Clinico-Microbiological tests on clinical samples
  • To teach Under-Graduate and Post-Graduate students
  • To guide Post-Graduate students
  • To impart training to technical personnel on clinical laboratory techniques
  • To conduct practical training to internship and externship students
  • To map the prevalence of various disease conditions occurring in animals based on the data generated in the laboratory
  • To establish the molecular diagnosis unit for specific diseases of animals

We aim to deliver high quality clinical and laboratory research services. We support our hospital's veterinarians as well as veterinarians of other units of TANUVAS. We also perform testing for researchers working on special projects and studies, and can work with individuals to tailor specific testing as needed.

Our testing services are comprehensive and accurate. Tests are carried out by qualified and trained professional staff with expertise in specialized equipment as per standard operating procedures. Samples are critically screened and interpreted meticulously by our expertise faculty. Accurate reporting of results is the strength of our laboratory which helps in quality patient care as accurate and early diagnosis helps to hasten the treatment to ailing animals.

Activities

  • The laboratory is primarily a teaching/service laboratory, aiding in the teaching of Clinical laboratory diagnosis to veterinary students. This is accomplished by providing laboratory results for the diagnosis and treatment of disease in patients admitted to the Veterinary Clinical Complex (VCC) of Madras Veterinary College.
  • In the process of upgradation, CCL is now equipped with certain state-of- the - art automations for effective and rapid screening of clinical samples.

Infrastructure

This laboratory is working in all days including holidays.

Working hours: 8am to 5pm in weekdays and 8am to 11.30 am in all holidays

This laboratory is comprised of following laboratory units:

  • Clinical Haematology (Study of blood samples and its components and interpretation)
  • Clinical Biochemistry (Biochemical profiling of serum samples)
  • Clinical Parasitology (Examination of blood smear for parasites and faecal analysis)
  • Clinical dermatology (Examination of skin scrapings)
  • Clinical urology (urinalysis)
  • Clinical microbiology (Culture,Isolation & identification of bacteria & fungi, Antibiogram, ABST etc.)
  • Cytology - FNAC- Study of cells mainly examining the body fluids such as exudates, transudates, pus and other discharges / Identifying neoplastic cells to differentiate it from non neoplastic masses.

Profiles have been designed to evaluate the status and function of the internal organs through Haematology, Serum Biochemistry, Urinalysis, Cytology, Dermatological and Coprological examinations. Clinical microbiological screening of the clinical samples for diagnosing infectious agents and its antibiogram are routinely carried out.
Antibiotic sensitivity test is routinely carried out for specie antibiotic treatment for bacterial diseases. In the process of automation for rapid and efficient screening of samples, CCL is now equipped with Auto hemo analyzer for haematology, fully automated serum biochemical analyser for biochemistry and Uriscan machine for automated urinalysis, sophisticated microscope attached with CCTV monitor and high megapixel camera for visualising and capturing salient findings.

Analysis Facility / Equipment
Hematology Auto Haemo analayser (4 part) - Exigo
Auto Haemo analyser (3 part) - Mindray Bc2800
Serum biochemistry Auto Biochemistry analyzer - A15 BIO SYSTEMS
Electrolyte analyser-DIESTRO 103AP

Education

  • Undergraduate teaching-B.V.Sc &b A.H.: VCP Veterinary Clinical Practices-I (0+1) in third professional year and VCP Veterinary Clinical Practices-II (0+6)- Diagnostic laboratory section in fourth professional year
  • Offering PG Diploma course in Veterinary Clinical Laboratory Diagnosis (PGVCLD) under distance mode

Outreach / Training

  • Training Program for Field Veterinarians, Practitioners and Veterinary graduates in clinical laboratory diagnostic techniques has also been carried out regularly under Clinical skill upgradation on small animal practice.
  • A one-year PG Diploma Course on Veterinary Clinical Laboratory Diagnosis – Distance mode is being offered by the department since the academic year 2013-14.
  • With the introduction of automation in screening of clinical materials a self-financing scheme of CCL is underway to generate the funds needed for reagents and other consumables and thereby to attain self-sufficiency in this mission. At the moment, the sample screening is done with nominal charges for the ward samples.
  • Screening of clinical samples of domestic, pet, experimental and wild animal species from private / practicing veterinarians / research scholars and results requested by clients of OP/IP cases of hospital are on cost basis only.
