Veterinary University Training and Research Centre, Madurai was originally started as Poultry Research and Development Centre on 13.11.80. This center disseminates the research findings to the field and takes up field problems of livestock farms to the scientists.
- So far this centre has offered 155 on and off campus training programmes to the farming community and trained 3997 farmers, unemployed youth, school dropouts, Self Help Groups, women and college students. This centre also gives technical advises to the trainees periodically for solving their problems at the field level.
- Fracture management with modern internal fixation techniques like Steinmann pinning and plating, anaesthetic procedures and surgical techniques for canine were demonstrated to the veterinarians of Animal Husbandry Department.
- Expert opinions were offered on various critical cases to the field veterinarians.
- A Village Information Centre was established at Puthuthamaraipatti village to provide information on agriculture, animal husbandry, health, education, employment, marketing, etc. The centre has a PC with Internet facility, a small library, VCD, Radio, Internet, and CD ROM. "A basic computer literacy training programme was organised in the village. This centre offers advises and replies to the queries of the farmers through online for solving their problems in livestock farming.
- A part II scheme on "Transfer of oestrus synchronization technology and programmed breeding" was carried out at Palamedu and nearby villages by Department of Biotechnology, MVC in collaboration with this centre. About 50 - 55% conception rate in synchronized oestrus and significant reduction in intercalving period were achieved.
- Persistent Nasal Schistosomiasis was diagnosed in B.Kallanai village.
- A research programme on "Adoption of Modern Techniques for Treatment of Canine Femoral Fracture in Field Conditions" is being carried out.

- Periodical disease investigation is being carried out in and around Madurai District to screen for various diseases in livestock and poultry.
- Outbreak of enterotoxaemia in Madurai and Sivagangai district was reported in time and suitable treatment and preventive vaccinations were carried out in collaboration with animal husbandry department.
- Regular training to the farmers, women of SHGs, unemployed youth and entrepreneurs in scientific management of livestock farms and livestock based enterprises
- Screening for leptospirosis, brucellosis, BTV and salmonella in farm animals
- Disease investigation in poultry
- Introduction of estrus synchronization and programmed breeding technology for better fertility management in dairy animals
- Studies to assess the feasibility for technology transfer
- Adoption of villages for empowerment of rural women through transfer of technology
- Creating awareness among students about the animal husbandry and veterinary science through guest lectures, exhibitions and training programmes.
