VETERINARY COLLEGE AND RESEARCH INSTITUTE, NAMAKKAL
BACKGROUND
The Department of Poultry Science in Veterinary College and Research Institute, Namakkal was started during the year 1985 and continuously offering Under-Graduate Education (B.V.Sc. & A.H.), the Post-Graduate courses viz. M.V.Sc. and Ph.D. were started from 1993 and 1995 onwards, respectively. The multifaceted activities of this Department are,
1) U.G. and P.G. education,
2) Centre of Advanced Faculty Training in Egg and Poultry (ICAR Scheme),
3) Maintaining Poultry Farm Complex,
4) Maintaining Hatchery for supplying day-old chicks of several poultry species,
5) U.G. co-ordination activities (2006-07 batch),
6) Carrying out Post-Graduate and need based researches and
7) Extension activities.
Under VCI syllabus, one U.G. course, LPM 322 - Avian breeding, feeding and management (3+1) is offered for B.V.Sc. & A.H. students in sixth semester. However, in the present VCI pattern, the number of courses is increased into two.
- LPM 211 Avian Production and Management (1+1) and
- LPM 221 – Commercial Poultry Production and Hatchery Management (1+1).
For M.V.Sc. students 8 courses are offered each year. So far 42 M.V.SC. students and 9 Ph.D. scholars obtained their degree and five are in progress. Apart from routine Department’s Post-Graduate research activities, other externally funded research schemes and Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology research projects were carried out in this Department.

- To impart teaching for Under Graduate, Post Graduate and Doctoral Programmes.
- To conduct research programmes for M.V.Sc., and Ph.D., Scholars
- Farm advisory services.
- Conducting training programme to the progressive farmers.

INFRASTRUCTURE
- A/C lecture hall for conducting CAFT programmes and P.G. classes
- Well equipped U.G. laboratory with sophisticated equipment for estimation of proximate principles and mycotoxin analysis.
- Fully automatic hatchery unit with uninterrupted power system and digital display incubators.
- Modern Japanese quail brooder cum grower house with cage and nipple drinking system
- Modern elevated cage quail breeder house with cage and semi-automatic feeding system.
- Modern elevated cage layer house with automatic feeding, watering and climate control systems.
- Modern turkey chick cum grower house

ACHIEVEMENTS / EXCELLENCE
- An ICAR fully financed scheme, “Centre of Advanced Faculty Training in Eggs and Poultry” is functioning in this Department.
- Evolved new Japanese quail strain, “Namakkal Quail-1”
- Revolving Fund Scheme on “Standardization of Nutrient requirements, production and marketing of Japanese quail”
- Revolving Fund Scheme on “Standardization of Nutrient requirements, production and marketing of Turkey”
- Conducted International Poultry Expo and Conference – 2010 from 8th – 10th January 2010.

Outreach
- Continuous supply of “Namakkal quail-1” chicks to the farmers throughout Tamil Nadu and neighbouring states.
- Supply of day-old turkey poults, cross-bred chicken, Guinea fowl, fancy birds etc. to the needy farmers, unemployed youth and women.
- Conducting national level trainer training programmes regularly under Centre of Advanced Faculty Training.
