Department of Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology

BACKGROUND
            The department was started on 14.06.1985 with the scheme ‘Unit XIII-Veterinary Education and Research - Veterinary Plan - Institute of Higher Studies and Innovations, Veterinary College and Research Institute, Namakkal’. The department of Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology is offering B.V.Sc., and M.V.Sc., courses, which is a continuing process every year.

OBJECTIVES

            Main objective:
a. Imparting education in veterinary pharmacology and toxicology to under-graduate and post-graduate students.
b. Conducting pharmaceutical meet for outgoing B.V.Sc., students.
c. Offering drug information services to the needy doctors and farmers.

            Research Objectives:
a. Documentation and Identification of active principles of plant origin for the treatment of viral and bacterial diseases of poultry and cattle.
b. Collection of materials to develop a herbal garden for the development of ethno-pharmacology wing.
c. Collaborating with pharmaceutical companies for evaluating their products.

INFRA STRUCTURE
            All infrastructural facilities are available for U.G. Practicals as mentioned in VCI minimum requirements.
A. The following instruments are available for assessing drugs acting on C.N.S.    
Analgesiometer.
Hot plate apparatus.
Rota-rod apparatus.
Pole climbing apparatus.
Actophotometer.
Tele thermometer.
B. The following instruments are also available for assessing the pharmaceutical quality control of drugs:

  1. Tablet friability test apparatus.
  2. Tablet hardness tester.
  3. Tablet disintegration test apparatus.
  4. Tablet dissolution test apparatus.
C. Further, computer aided learning (CAL) is also being used for teaching experimental pharmacology to U.G. Students.
D. The department has all the required facilities for the conduct of P.G. practicals as well as research work.
            The following infrastructural facilities are available:
  1. U.V. Double beam spectrophotometer with system.
  2. Flame photometer with system.
  3. Laminar Flow – Vertical type.
  4. Rotary vacuum evaporator.
  5. Micro pipettes of various sizes.
  6. Homogenizer
  7. Micro centrifuge.
  8. Water bath.
  9. Rotary shaker.
  10. Magnetic stirrer – Hot plate.
  11. Vertex shaker.
  12. Soxhlet extraction apparatus.
  13. Laboratory blender.
  14. Digital vernier caliper.
  15. TLC apparatus.
  16. Plethysmometer

ONGOING PROJECTS

1. Exploration of herbs to alleviate the adverse effects of indiscriminate use of antibacterial drugs in poultry (Ph.D.,).
2. Pharmacological evaluation of emu oil with or without herb (Cleome viscosa) for anti-inflammatory activity in rats (M.V.Sc.,).
3. Documentation of indiscriminate use of antibacterial drugs in poultry, in and around Namakkal (Departmental project).
           
CURRENT FOCUS
           
1. Establishment and maintenance of Instructional herbal garden and utilization of herbs for PG research.
2. Screening of plant extracts for antibacterial, hepatoprotective, immunomodulatory and anti-arthritic property.
3. Collection of data on indiscriminative use of antibiotic in poultry industry in and around Namakkal.
