Department of Dairy Science

Genesis and Objectives

This Department was started during 1985, with the objective of

  • Teaching the undergraduate students of B.V.Sc., in Dairy Technology, Dairy Microbiology, Dairy Chemistry and Public Health in relation to milk.
  • Conducting research on need based field problems,
  • Dissemination of research finding through publication and conducting training programmes for the dairy farmers and dairy entrepreneurs and women self-help groups.

The Department offers 2 courses for B.V.Sc., students under VCI pattern.

LPT 311 Milk and Milk Products Technology 1+1
VPH 311 Milk hygiene and Public Health 1+1

A university subproject titled “ use of vegetables and leaf extracts in flavoured milk and ice cream” was completed. A university sub-project titled “ solids not fat content of milk of cross bred cattle in and around Namakkal” is sanctioned. A new project proposal to conduct training programmes to the farmers and veterinarians on “ Processing Quality Control and Marketing of Dairy Products” was submitted to the Ministry of Food Processing Industries for approval.

Ongoing Project: ICAR Project on "Model Demonstration Unit for Processing of Milk and Preparation of value added Dairy Products" [Rs. 99 lakhs]

Thirty four Training programmes on value addition of dairy products were organized for the women self help groups of Tamilnadu Corporation for Development of Women Ltd. during 2001-03.

  • Establishment of dairy technology laboratory for undergraduate teaching.
  • Establishment of dairy quality control laboratory for testing the residues in milk.
