Department of Clinics

The Veterinary College Teaching Hospital, Namakkal which was erstwhile functioning as a Veterinary Hospital, under the Directorate of Animal Husbandry, Government of Tamil Nadu was taken over by the Veterinary College and Research Institute, Namakkal to impart training to the Veterinary Graduates of this Institution in the year 1989. Realizing the need to provide better and effective service to the livestock and pets of this region and to give hands on training to the Veterinary Graduates, a separate department of Clinics was established in the year 1994 with the deployment of staff from all the clinical subjects viz. Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Clinical Medicine and Surgery.

This Department presently functioning in Veterinary Hospital Campus at Trichy Road started its service in old asbestos sheds of the Animal Husbandry Department. Subsequently, different specialized units like Small Animal Medicine, Small Animal Surgery, Small animal Gynaecology, Large Animal Surgery, Artificial Insemination, Large Animal Infertility and Large Animal Obstetrics were created for effective teaching and to bestow better service to the public.

Gradually permanent structures were built to accommodate Clinical laboratory, Casualty unit, Large animal inpatient unit with owners rest room, Small animal Operation theatre with modern facilities, Referral clinics for small and large animals, Students lecture hall equipped with audio visual aids, De-torsion pit for the correction of uterine torsion in cattle and buffaloes, Deep bore well with over head tank with the capacity of 20,000 liters to provide perennial water supply and Large animal operation theatre with shadow less lamps &  hydraulic operation table

On an average 30 to 40 cattle and buffaloes, small ruminants and around 20 small animals are being treated in this hospital every day.  In Large animals around 10 major surgeries and 15 minor surgeries are performed per month.  Around 15 major surgeries and 20 minor surgeries in small animals are done every month.  An average of 12-15 artificial inseminations is done per day.  Obstetrical emergencies especially dystocia, uterine torsion and Prolapse of the uterus and cervix are attended to at all hours.

A few wild animals like Malabar squirrel, Scaly Ant eater and Indian Rock Python, Spotted deer and Barking deer belonging to the forest department have been successfully treated here.  A few temple elephants were also referred to this hospital and were successfully treated for various ailments.

The hospital provides special diagnostic and treatment facilities like Endoscopy, Ultrasonography, ECG, Diathermy and Cryo-Surgery  and Dental Scaling, Small and Large animal surgical services, Contrast radiographic facilities, Physiotherapy, Large animal reproductive Ultrasonography, Infertility clinic and inhalant anesthetic facilities for small and large animals. The endosocpy unit of this hospital extends its services not only to cattle, buffaloes and dogs but also to equines.  Hormonal assays and vaginal exfoliative cytology are carried out routinely to rule out the stage of estrous cycle in canines.

Using these modern diagnostic and therapeutic modalities, many interesting cases like Canine dilated cardiomyopathy, Splenic and Hepatic tumours, Fungal Pneumonia in buffalo, Guttural pouch mycosis in horse etc., have been successfully diagnosed and treated in this hospital. Diagnosis and surgical management of Intussusception in cattle and buffaloes have been standardized here. The hospital is well equipped with all the infra structure facilities for small and large animal Orthopaedic surgery.  Modern ophthalmic surgical procedures like Cataract extraction,   conjunctival flap for corneal ulcers and Intra Ocular Lens implantation has also been introduced in this hospital recently.

The new facilities created in the hospital campus during the last three years under the ICAR grant are   Operating microscope, weighing scales for large and small animals, Public address system for the lecture hall, Broad band connectivity, Air-conditioning of Endoscopy room and a coin telephone for public use.

A large animal anaesthesia machine with a ventilator was donated by the College of Veterinary Medicine, Michigan State University, USA to this hospital which is used for performing complicated surgeries like intussusception, thoracic surgery, Orthopedic surgery etc., in large animals.
