POULTRY RESEARCH STATION

Poultry Research Station was established in the year 1941. It became a constituent unit of Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University from 20.09.1989.

  • To carry out research on breeding, nutrition, management and disease prevention in poultry and to develop poultry suitable to Tamilnadu
  • To training students and farmers
  • To supply research inputs like incubated eggs, chicks, feed and birds
  • To popularise poultry husbandry among the public

Two strains of chicken viz., Nandanam Chicken - I and Nandanam Broiler – II was developed.

This strain was developed from the Sterling strain of Rhode Island Red breed. Nandanam chicken – I is a purebred having dark red plumage with medium sized body and is a dual-purpose breed.

NANDANAM BROILER – II

This is a coloured broiler chicken developed through sustained selection and breeding for 10 years in the synthetic broiler scheme. Multi coloured feather pattern with good survivability under the backyard system are the advantages of this breed.

Japanese quails were introduced in the Poultry Research Station, during the year 1983 form Central Avian Research Institute, Izat Nagar, Uttar Pradesh. Through intense research and selective breeding, Nandanam Quail – I and Nandanam Quail – II were released during the year 1987 and 1993 respectively. At present there are three varieties of Japanese Quails maintained viz- regular, White breasted and pure white.

Three varieties of turkey are available viz, Native Black, Beltsville small white and their crosses.

The research station has a farm advisory cell, which guides the poultry farmers approaching with various poultry related problems.

  • Japanese quail farming – Second week of every month (Monday to Friday) – 5 days duration.
  • Turkey production – Fourth week of every month (Monday to Friday) - 5 days duration.

Besides the above, special programmes were also conducted regularly for entrepreneurs, which include Quail farming, Turkey farming, Pre release training for defense personal, Feed mixing, Flock health, Hatchery and Breeding flock management.
