DEPARTMENT OF VETERINARY PATHOLOGY
The Department of Veterinary Pathology came into existence in the year 1935. During the year 1969, this department was upgraded as a postgraduate department to offer MVSc degree. Doctorate programme was started in 1983. So far, the department has produced 76 postgraduates and 22 doctorates. Besides education, the department is actively involved in necropsy diagnosis, histopathological diagnosis, ultrastructural pathology and animal disease investigation for diagnosis of livestock, poultry, wild animal and fish diseases of economic and zoonotic importance.
Besides, undergraduate education, the department has so far produced 76 postgraduates and 22 doctorates.
More than 50 research programmes had been carried out so far in this Department, a few of which are mentioned below:
- ICAR Research Project on "Etiopathogenesis of Necrotic hepatitis in Poultry” during 1975-1978
- ICAR Research Project on "Studies on Avian leucosis complex” during 1975-98
- DST scheme on "Studies on transmissible venereal tumour in canines" during 1977-1980
- ICAR Research Project on "Studies on the etiology and pathology of chronic hill haematuria in Tamil Nadu” during 1977-1980
- ICAR Research Project on" Study of neoplasms of the upper respiratory tract in Bovines" during 1977-1982
- DBT scheme on "Establishment of cell cultures derived from hepatopancereas and ovary of Penaeid shrimps" during 1999-2000
- TNSST Student Project on “Efficacy of plant extracts (Acalypha indica, Melia azadirachta, Pongamia glabra) in the treatment of canine infectious dermatitis" during June 2000.
- TANUVAS Plan Scheme on "Studies on the Oncogenesis and etiopathology of Sinus Tumour in Bovines" during 2002
- TANUVAS Part II scheme on "Studies on Mycotoxicosis with special reference to immunoassay diagnosis and pathology” during 2003
Annually, about 800 necropsies are performed on the carcasses of animals and bird carcasses. The histopathological unit processes over 5000 specimens per annum, originating from necropsy, government and private livestock farms and research projects of our university and other institutes.
The Department has brought laurels to the University by identifying Rubarth's disease, Pullet disease, Jaagsiekte, Caprine pleuropneumonia and Hypertrophic gastritis in horses and Inclusion body hepatitis in poultry for the first time in India.
