DEPT. OF VETERINARY AHE AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP
The Department of Extension was established in the year 1963 with an aim to teach under graduate students in the aspects of sociology, rural development and transfer of scientific know-how to the farming community. From 2000 –2001 onwards the department offers three courses in accordance with the VCI regulations. In the year 1990-91, post-graduate programme on Animal Husbandry Extension was introduced.
The Department of Communication and Entrepreneurship was merged with this department on 01.05.2003 and was renamed as the Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension and Entrepreneurship. The objectives of the department are:
- To offer UG and PG courses in the discipline of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension
- To undertake research in Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension
- To provide farm advisory services to livestock farmers and entrepreneurs
- To arrange for dissemination of scientific information on livestock and poultry farming through mass media.
The main areas of research work undertaken are adoption behaviour of livestock farmers, farming pattern and constraints, assessing training and information needs, effectiveness of various teaching methods, impact analysis of various developmental programmes and institutions and content analysis of farm magazines and newspapers.
A well-equipped video laboratory caters to the needs of producing video films on scientific know-how on livestock and fisheries technology. On a regular basis, lessons on livestock and fish farming are telecast through Doordarshan. The videocassettes are also made available for sale through ATIC, Livestock Research Station campus, Kattupakkam – 603 203.The list of video cassettes available and their price are as below:

Audio programmes are broadcast through All India Radio. Audio CDs are also produced on scientific livestock and fisheries management for enriching the knowledge and skill of livestock farmers.
A user-friendly touch screen kiosk was developed and maintained by the department to enable rural and urban clientele to have access to information. On dog care, breeding management, feeding management for cattle, clean milk production, mastitis and frequently asked questions.
The department possesses two seminar halls, one audiovisual lab and a conference hall with audio-visual equipment to impart teaching in a conducive learning situation besides providing these facilities for conduct of seminars, conferences, workshops, meetings etc.
