MADRAS VETERINARY COLLEGE

DEPARTMENT OF WILD LIFE SCIENCES

The Department of Wildlife Science was established in 1994 to offer a post-graduate course (MVSc) in wildlife science. The objective of this department is to impart education on Wildlife Science with emphasis on wildlife health and disease diagnosis. A course on "wildlife management" is offered to B.V.Sc. students. The other objectives include:

  • Consultation on health aspects of temple elephants in Tamil Nadu state
  • Wildlife rehabilitation works whenever required.
  • Diagnosis and treatment of diseases in wild animals.
  • Epidemiological studies on different disease conditions in wild animals.
  • Participation in the conservative measures of forest department by executing research programs helpful for the scientific management of the protected areas.
  • Health assessment studies in Snake Park, Guindy and Crocodile bank, Mamallapuram.
  • Creating awareness on wild animal health, conservation and ecological importance among the student community

This department had completed two projects funded by Wildlife Institute of India, on Wildlife Health / Disease features and is currently implementing a project funded by Central Zoo Authority of India.

Research works were completed on the clinical features in elephants, leptospirosis in mongooses, parasitic studies in free ranging herbivores of Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary, reproduction related hormonal profile in elephants, behavioral studies in carnivores, reproductive hormones related studies in felids, Laparoscopic sexing in birds, mineral related studies in birds of Vedanthangal bird sanctuary, parasitological study in free ranging peacocks etc.
