DEPARTMENT OF LIVESTOCK PRODUCTION AND MANAGEMENT
The Department of Livestock Production and Management, formerly known as Department of Hygiene, is one of the oldest departments of the College, having its origin in the year 1903.
Currently this department is engaged in teaching the subjects of Animal handling, Dairy Farming, Sheep and Goat, Swine, Rabbit, Pet, Draught and Laboratory animal Production and Management to under and post graduate students. So far 94 M.V.Sc's and 18 for Ph.D.'s had been produced by this department.
This department has also been engaged in research on different specialized livestock farming systems, management techniques, stress management, health management, nutritional management and economical eco friendly utilization and disposal of farm waste etc. The faculty of this department has published 247 research papers, 263 popular articles, two books and fifteen teaching manuals.
This department is also engaged as human resources in the specialized field to the needy organizations apart from rendering farm advisory services to the needy farmers and livestock entrepreneurs. This department has also conducted a National seminar on Climatology and Animal Production in 1984 and a national symposium on Livestock Industry for Self/Gainful Employment in 1996. Training programme on HRD in augmenting livestock production sponsored by directorate of extension, ministry of agriculture, Govt. of India in 2001 and short course on Newer technologies in augmenting livestock production sponsored by ICAR in 2002.
This department currently offers regular medium range weather forecast to the farming community especially for livestock holders in the north eastern zone of Tamil Nadu with a help of department of Science and Technology, Government of India (NCMRWF).
