MADRAS VETERINARY COLLEGE
CENTRALISED CLINICAL LABORATORY (CCL)
The Centralised Clinical Laboratory (CCL), established in 1993, formerly referred as Clinical Pathology since 1971 strives to meet the exacting demands of advancing veterinary clinical practice where the clinician is often made to rely completely on laboratory profiles, to confirm his diagnosis, with the emergence of new systemic disorders and infectious diseases.
The clinical laboratory data generated from the screening of clinical samples is integral to nearly all-diagnostic investigations. Searching a profile for evidence of a disease pattern is as important a part of the database for each patient as the physical examination and history. Profiles are designed to evaluate the status and function of the internal organs through Haematology (auto haemo analyzer/ manual), Serum biochemistry (semi-auto analyser), Urinalysis (Uriscan/ manual), Cytology, Dermatological and Coprological examinations.
The provision and interpretation of results, which are precise, relevant meeting time schedules, are the hallmarks of the Centralised Clinical Laboratory and the objectives framed are:
- To carry out various Clinico–Pathological, Clinico–Parasitological, Clinico-Biochemical and Clinico-Microbiological tests on clinical samples
- To teach undergraduate and postgraduate students
- To guide post - graduate students
- To impart training to technical personnel on clinico-pathological techniques
- To conduct practical training to internship and externship students
- To map the prevalence of parasitic diseases based on the data generated in the laboratory
In the process of development the CCL is now equipped with certain state-of- the - art automations for effective and rapid screening of clinical samples.
Besides this the CCL, caters to the need of PG research and trainings are offered to International Students which included Internees from Chittagong Government Veterinary College, Bangladesh and Students from Michigan State University USA
The CCL is to be equipped for the conduct of advanced diagnostic procedures to widen the scope of clinical diagnosis and provide the perfect platform for the clinican to provide a comprehensive picture on the status of the animal patient to the owner concerned. To begin with Endocrinology and Serology are to be expeditiously introduced.

- A training Program for Field Veterinarian in diagnostic laboratories, Practitioners and Veterinary graduates has also been designed and approved for conduct.
- A certificate course for Veterinary Laboratory technicians has also been proposed.
- With the introduction of automation in screening of clinical materials it is proposed to initiate a self-financing unit at CCL to generate the funds needed for the costly reagents and attain self-sufficiency in operations. At the moment the sample screening is done free of cost
An Associate Professor and Head and an Assistant Professor presently man the Centralised Clinical Laboratory. In addition, two technicians, an laboratory assistant and a junior assistant are aiding the departmental activities.
- The Department is headed by Dr.S.Vairamuthu, who has specialized in Veterinary pathology. With over 16 peer-reviewed international publications and 25 national publications. He has been an academic and Research and guided 8 MVSc, research students in Veterinary Pathology. His area of interest is focused on Avian pathology, clinical pathology and clinical oncology and cytology. He has expertise in Electron microscopy. The HOD is technically assisted by an Assistant Professor with a specialization in Veterinary Microbiology.
- Dr.M.Anandachithra, Assistant Professor
- Dr.K.Padmanath, Assistant Professor
