DEPARTMENT OF FISHERIES BIOLOGY AND RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

  • To offer Fishery Biology courses for U.G., P.G. and Ph.D. programmes
  • To undertake research on the Biology of finfishes and shellfishes
  • To carryout extension in the field of Fishery Biology of finfishes and shellfishes
  • To guide P.G. and Ph.D. students in Fisheries Biology and Capture Fisheries Research
  1. Resource assessment of ornamental reef fisheries of Gulf of Mannar , South – East Coast of India ICAR- NATP-CGP mode project Rs.7.67 lakh.
  2. Rearing and broodstock development of spiny lobsters (University research project).
  3. Growth, maturation and spawning of the blue crab, Portunus pelagicus (Univ.Research Project)

Potential fishing zone satellite data received from Indian National Centre for Oceans Information services are disseminated to fisherfolk.

  • A study on squids and cuttlefishes of Tuticorin coast showed that four species viz L. duvauceli, L. lessoniana, D. sibogae and S. inermis have been exploited beyond the MSY level.
  • Clove oil has been found to be an effective anesthetic for ornamental fishes at 20ppm. It can be used as sedative at 5 to 10 ppm concentration.
